Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin LIVE: Stream, latest updates and result from fight tonight

Intense final press conference as Canelo and Golokvin prepare to end rivalry with trilogy bout

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will square off for the third and presumably final time tonight as the pair seek a clear conclusion to what has been a controversial rivalry.

Canelo (57-2-2, 39 knockouts) and “GGG” (42-1-1, 37 KOs) first clashed at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in September 2017, fighting to a controversial split draw when most observers believed that then-unified middleweight champion Golovkin had done enough to claim the victory. Twelve months later in the same venue, the rivals clashed again and produced an instant classic. Again, many felt that GGG had deserved the win, but Canelo took the titles from the Kazakh with a majority-decision win – marking the first loss of Golovkin’s professional career.

Four years on, Golovkin and Canelo are set for another September showdown at the T-Mobile Arena, this time with the Mexican’s super-middleweight titles on the line. Alvarez, 32, enters the bout on the back of just the second defeat of his pro career, a points loss to light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May. Meanwhile, age is not on GGG’s side as the 40-year-old looks to finally score an official victory over Canelo, but he is at least in form – having last competed in April, when he stopped Ryota Murata in the ninth round. Tonight, one of boxing’s great modern rivalries looks set to be decided for good. Follow live updates and results from the main event and undercard, below.

Canelo’s two professional defeats have come against Floyd Mayweather – in 2013 – and Dmitry Bivol this May.

Meanwhile, Golovkin’s sole loss as a pro came against Canelo in the pair’s second fight, a less controversial result than their initial draw but still one that was disputed by many observers.

Canelo has looked relaxed and in good spirits backstage all evening, but now he seems very determined as the cameras linger in his dressing room ahead of the main event.

“This is the fear in fans of Golovkin: that he will come away from this famous trilogy with two defeats and a draw, though his performances will have warranted so much more. That is, of course, to preempt the outcome of tonight’s trilogy bout, but the majority expect Canelo to finally earn a clear win against Golovkin, potentially even a stoppage that could drastically alter perceptions of this great rivalry and lead to an unfortunate revisionism of GGG’s career.”

Steve Bunce for Indy Sport: “Golovkin wants revenge in the ring for the two fights he believes he won, and Canelo wants to end all the talk about his controversial wins forever. They are both righteous in their hopes for Saturday night, both assured of their own ability to deliver the final word.

“It is clear that Golovkin is not as wicked in the ring now as he was during his finest years when he ruined a dozen top challengers, often in cruel displays. He cut fighters down with damning punches to liver and head and they often fell in agony and screaming. He has stopped or knocked out 37 of the 42 men he has beaten. He was ruthless, cold in the ring and a smiling delight away from the lights. ‘I bring big drama show,’ he would predict. And he did.

“Canelo is more methodical but equally savage, and his fists have left so many out cold or curled up in tears on the canvas. He was not ready for Mayweather, and Bivol was too big and smart, but there appear very few signs of ageing in the wonderboy.”

A reminder that Rodriguez was docked a point for a low blow along the way.

No point deduction for the champion this time, however.

Rodriguez vs Gonzalez – Round 10

A right uppercut is good for Rodriguez as Gonzalez steps in. Impressive head movement from the champion, too.

Rodriguez with a one-two that sees Gonzalez lean back and bounce off the ropes.

The American flings a flurry to the head of Gonzalez, who blocks the first few shots then rolls away from the next couple and buries a left hook into the champion’s midriff.
