‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ Trailer: The Crawleys Go Hollywood

Creator Julian Fellowes may be busy with his new prestige series, HBO’s The Gilded Age, but he’s also taking his OG cast of upstairs, downstairs characters to another age. Focus Features has released a new trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era, which sees the Crawley family go from Hollywood filmmaking in their own backyard to holidaying in the South of France.

The sequel to 2019’s Downton Abbey film, which imagined the Downton co. hosting the king and queen of England, A New Era centers on the struggle between modernity and a mystery from the past. While Mary (Michelle Dockery) works with a filmmaker and movie star (new cast members Hugh Dancy and Dominic West) to film “a moving picture”at her sprawling estate, Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess reveals a secret from her past.

“Years before you were born, I met a man,” the Countess begins, before sharing that said man gifted her with some lush real estate. “Do I look as if I’d turn down a villa in the South of France?” she quips. Naturally, the Crawleys opt to take a holiday in the region. While there, they try to uncover just how the Dowager Countess inherited the family’s new piece of property. The matriarch warns: “Women like us fall into two categories—dragons and fools. You must make sure they think of you as a dragon,” adding, “And with that, I will say good night and leave you to discuss my mysterious past.”

Downton Abbey: A New Era will intermingle classic cast members—Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, etc.—with a few fresh faces, including Dancy, West, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Jonathan Zaccaï. Originally scheduled for release at Christmas 2021, then March 2022, Downton Abbey: A New Era will hit theaters on May 20.
