- Google Flights data shows passengers can save money by flying mid-week and getting layover flights.
- Tuesdays aren’t necessarily the cheapest day to book flights, Google Flights added.
- The best time to book flights for Thanksgiving or Christmas is 52 days before departure day, the data showed.
Flying mid-week or opting for a layover flight can save passengers money, according to Google Flights research.
James Byers, a group product manager at Google Flights, explained in a statement on Wednesday various ways for passengers to find the best deal for flight tickets.
Byers said that flying on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays is 12% cheaper than taking a flight on the weekend. Passengers can save 20% more if they choose to fly domestically on these days, rather than internationally, he added.
Another trick to save money on flights is choosing a layover flight instead of flying direct. Byers said that nonstop flights are, on average, 20% more expensive than layovers.
Although Tuesday is cited as the best day to book the cheapest flights, Byers said in the statement there wasn’t much difference in price when booking midweek compared to weekends.
“If you shop for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays instead of Saturdays or Sundays, prices have only been 1.9% cheaper on average over the past five years,” he said.
Booking flight tickets between 21 and 60 days before departure tends to be the cheapest, according to Byers, but it depends on the destination. For example, the best time to book flights for Thanksgiving or Christmas is 52 days before departure day, Byers said.
Google Flights’ research comes at a time when passengers are faced with costly airline fares because of higher fuel prices and strong travel demand. This, combined with staff shortages in the airline industry and flight cancellations and delays has meant it has been a challenging summer for air travel.
