James Hird GWS Giants assistant coach, Dean Solomon, Mark McVeigh, interim, who will be their next coach

Essendon greats James Hird and Dean Solomon have joined the Giants’ coaching staff to assist interim coach and ex-Bombers teammate Mark McVeigh for the rest of 2022.

Both men will take on part-time roles and work remotely, from Melbourne and northern New South Wales respectively, though they may later relocate to western Sydney.

It will be Hird’s first official coaching position in the AFL since his exit from Essendon late in 2015 amid the drugs saga.

Hird previously held a leadership advisor role and has been floated by some as a potential next senior coach for GWS.

Solomon was surprisingly sacked by Gold Coast with two years on his contract late in 2020, with a chorus of concern emerging over the decision.

Fox Footy’s Gerard Healy said at the time it placed “a dark cloud over one of the great stories of the year (the then-midtable Suns)”.

Hird and Solomon will work alongside existing assistants Steve Johnson, Amon Buchanan and Craig Jennings under McVeigh.

“As we head into the next 13 weeks, it’s a great opportunity to have Dean and James join the club’s coaching department,” GWS general manager of football Jason McCartney said.

“They’re both obviously close with our interim senior coach Mark McVeigh and jumped at the opportunity to support him, our coaching group and the players over the remainder of the season

“They both bring a fresh perspective and new ideas and we’re excited to have them join the Giants.”
