The movie’s digital release date is listed as August 23 on Amazon, but it’s unclear exactly when it will arrive on Paramount Plus. Though other recent Paramount movies hit the studio’s streaming service 45 days after they premiered in theaters, “Top Gun: Maverick” will not follow this release strategy.

Tom Cruise returns to the “Top Gun” franchise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a US Navy test pilot who is tasked with training a group of young Top Gun graduates for a high-risk specialized mission. The detachment includes Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose. 

Val Kilmer also reprises his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, a longtime rival of Maverick’s. New cast members include Jennifer Connolly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. 

As of writing, “Top Gun: Maverick” holds a “97% Certified Fresh” rating on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics saying it’s better than the first movie. It’s also the highest grossing film of 2022 so far, with over $1.1 billion worldwide.

Right now, the only place you can watch “Top Gun: Maverick” is in a movie theater. You can look up movie times near you and purchase tickets on websites like Fandango.

When will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ be available to rent or buy? 

“Top Gun: Maverick” will be available to rent or buy from online streaming retailers starting August 23. You can preorder the movie for $20 from Amazon Prime Video to get streaming access instantly at 12:00 a.m. ET on August 23.

UHD quality. Preorders are for digital purchases, but a cheaper rental option is expected to arrive later this year. 

When will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ be available on Paramount Plus? 

“Top Gun: Maverick” will stream on Paramount Plus after its theatrical run wraps up, but an official release date hasn’t been announced.

Though other recent Paramount movies hit the streaming service 45 days after they premiered in theaters, “Top Gun: Maverick” will take longer to make its streaming debut. Paramount CEO Bob Bakish confirmed the movie’s exemption from the studio’s 45-day streaming window in an interview with the New York Times.

Since the movie is set to hit streaming retailers on August 23, it’s likely it will also debut on Paramount Plus at the same time. That said, this hasn’t been confirmed yet, so we’ll have to wait and see what Paramount decides. 

Once “Top Gun: Maverick” is available on Paramount Plus, all subscribers will be able to watch the new movie. The Essential plan is $5/month and includes access to the entire streaming library with limited commercial interruptions. The Premium plan is $10/month and lets you stream on-demand content without ads, plus you can watch your local CBS station live. 

 

When will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ be available on Blu-ray?

You can preorder the Blu-ray of “Top Gun: Maverick” now from Amazon, but an official release date hasn’t been announced. A 4K Blu-ray edition is also available for preorder on Amazon.

Both the Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray editions come with a code to redeem a streaming copy of the movie from your retailer of choice.

“Top Gun” is free to watch on Prime Video for Amazon Prime subscribers. Amazon Prime subscriptions cost $15 a month or $140 a year, but a standalone subscription to Prime Video without the other benefits of Prime costs $9 a month. “Top Gun” is streaming in UHD quality on Prime Video

The first “Top Gun” movie follows Maverick as he and a group of naval aviators are given the chance to train in the Navy’s Top Gun program. The movie was released in 1986 and has held cultural relevance since; in 2015, it was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for preservation.
