The 2021 calendar year table has Man City top by MILES

Manchester City‘s dominance in 2021 can be seen by taking a glance at the calendar year table for the entire Football League.

Pep Guardiola‘s side have left the competition trailing in their wake in the Premier League, breaking records along the way, too.

After lifting the Premier League title in May, the Citizens appear on course to repeat the feat this season, after establishing an eight point lead at the top of the table as we head into 2022.

And all this sees them streaks clear in the performance charts for this year, as collated by PA’s Head of Data Analysis Ben Mayhew, after collecting a staggering 110 points from the 44 matches they played.

That included 36 victories in the top flight – a record in English top-flight history. They also managed 113 goals. It is the most in Premier League history and the most scored by a top-flight side since 1960.

In total, City picked up on average 2.5 points every game they played, over half a point more than any other of the 92 sides in England’s top four divisions.

Behind them in the table are Chelsea, who managed 83 points from 42 points matches they played from january through December.

They were helped along the way by Jorginho’s penalty record. His ten goals from the spot in 2021 was a Premier League record.

Liverpool were third, with Jurgen Klopp’s side picking up 77 points from 41 matches – an average of 1.88 points per game.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion at the top of the table were Arsenal, who hold the fourth best record in the Football League in 2021.

They have collected just one point less than Liverpool from the same number of games, with Mikel Arteta’s men appearing to be on an upwards trajectory heading into 2022.

Outside of the Premier League, Sunderland are the top performing side in the EFL. Lee Johnson’s side are looking a strong contender for promotion back to the Championship this season, sitting top of League One going into the New Year.

And in 2021 they managed 28 wins across 53 matches, with only City fans seeing their team win more matches.

The best side in the Championship has been QPR, who had 26 wins across 47 matches, while Sutton United had the best record in League Two.

At the other end of the table, it is Premier League sides once again who are proving prominent.

Burnley’s year was one to forget, with Sean Dyche’s side propping up all the other 91 Football League clubs.

The Clarets saw just seven league vitories in 21, and mustered a point per game average of just 0.87.

Newcastle fared little better, winning eight of their 42 matches, with a point average of just 0.88.

Both will be looking for a rapid improvement if they are to beat the drop to the Championship in 2022.

Bristol Rovers and Scunthorpe also endured season to forget, with the former having suffered relegation to League Two, while the latter has been treading water perilously close to the drop out of league football.

As for defences, fans of Accrington Stanley had the toughest time of any sets of supporters this year.

They had to watch their side’s keeper pick the ball out of his net no fewer than 90 times over the course of the last 12 months.
