UT Arlington math professor selected for presidential award

Minerva Cordero, a math professor at UT Arlington, is one of 12 people to be selected for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

A math professor at UT Arlington has been selected by President Joe Biden to receive an award for her work as a STEM mentor at the university, according to a news release.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring has 12 recipients this year, including UTA’s Minerva Cordero.

Cordero received the award for the work she does mentoring students “outside the traditional classroom in the academic and professional development of the future science and engineering workforce,” according to the release.

Cordero said her ability to mentor her students wouldn’t be possible without guidance she received.

“This award would not be possible without the mentors who generously gave their time to my professional development, guiding me on the path to many successes,” Cordero said in the release. “I am privileged to the pay their investment forward and mentor many bright, talented students at UTA and within the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington communities.”

Cordero was selected as an If/Then ambassador in 2020 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the work she did in academic outreach to girls and young women, according to the release. She has also led national and local programs to make science and math curricula easier to access.
