Raiders star Semi Valemei pulled off a bone-rattling hit on AJ Brimson (which you can see in the video player above) in the final minute of his side’s stunning 24-22 comeback win over the Titans in Round Three — and the tackle was heard on the other side of the world.
Writing for US sports site SB Nation, James Dator said Valemei’s contact “has made my short list of the best tackles of all time, regardless of sport”, revealing he really appreciated one very cheeky aspect of it.
Brimson dropped the ball when he was poleaxed, guaranteeing the Raiders a two-point victory. Adding insult to injury, the Titans five-eighth had his pants pulled down — literally — such was the force of the contact.
Australian swimwear brand Budgy Smuggler was appreciative of the extra publicity as Brimson’s pair of pink jocks were exposed — and it made the monster hit that much sweeter for Dator.
“I’m sucker for such a pure form tackle, and this is the most brutal clean hit I can remember,” Dator wrote.
“Of course, it only gets better when you add that he popped poor AJ Brimson clean out of his shorts, revealing some rather stylish pink, leopard print underpants for his trouble.”
Dator also had a laugh at Budgy Smuggler promoting the tackle on social media, adding: “THEY TAGGED HIM IN THIS TOO! That has to be the most disrespectful thing an underwear company has ever done in the world of sports — and I love it.”
