Will Smith, whose recent win for Best Actor at the Oscars was understandably overshadowed by his decision to slap and shout obscenities at Chris Rock when the comedian made an ill-advised crack about Jada Pinkett Smith, has kept a low profile of late. There have been carefully worded social media statements, his Academy resignation, and his acceptance of the Academy’s decade-long ban from their ceremony, but the A-lister hasn’t made waves publicly since “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.
That ended early Saturday, when the actor was spotted at what TMZ reported was a private airport in Mumbai. (TMZ claimed that “it was clear the paparazzi in India knew he was coming.”) Smith smiled and waved to his fans 12-and-a-half time zones ahead of his home in Los Angeles.
It remains unclear why Smith was in India, or if it was for any business reason.
The Hindustan Times reported that Smith was staying at the JW Marriott Hotel Juhu, a 5-star rated luxury resort by the beach that features both an infinity pool and a salt water pool. The paper noted that Smith has been to India before, and recently recorded a video with spiritual leader Sadhguru.
Back in the U.S., The Slap’s aftermath continues to ripple across Hollywood. Some of Smith’s future projects appear to be on pause for now; Netflix reportedly canceled its sequel to Bright, though CNET noted the reasoning for the decision was unclear. There are also no shortage of rumors concerning the status of Will and Jada’s marriage.
